Video transcript for Reading, writing and arithmetic

[Music]

Dianne Robertson: In the olden days the children were not allowed to talk like that but I asked you to talk like that just then. But in the olden days the children were not allowed to talk and share ideas, they had to work by themselves, working by yourselves, you work by yourselves, you learn, you learn by remembering things. Now, we are going to try doing some reading, some writing and some arithmetic. Arithmetic is another name for maths. We’re going to chant the three times table, out nice and loud just like the olden days. You’ll have to help me.

Dianne/Students: 3 times 1 are 3. 3 times 2 are 6. 3 times 3 are 9. A little bit louder. 3 times 4 are 12. Well done. 3 times 5 are 15. 3 times 6 are 18. 3 times 7 are 21. 3 times 8 are 24. 3 times 9 are 27. 3 times 10 are 30. 3 11s are 33. And 3 times 12 are 36.

Dianne: What’s 3 6s young man? Oh, too slow, too slow you’ll have to stay in at lunchtime and write the times table out twenty times. That’s a lot isn’t it?

Students: Yes.

Dianne: Fancy that. You wouldn’t be staying in and writing out your tables twenty times. It’s a little bit different these days isn’t it? Now, we’ve done some arithmetic and some maths we are going to have a look at our beautiful fancy headings.
