What was used then?
This activity focuses on the historical understanding of continuity and change and the Historical Skill 'Analysis and use of sources'.
Introduce the concept of using photographs as evidence or clues to the past.
View each graphic in the slide show 'What was used then?'. Read and identify various elements of the text such as noun groups, pronouns, adjectives and punctuation. Allow children to make connections between their own experiences and each toy.
Talk about the toys in the slide show
Encourage students to discuss:
- what each toy is made of
- who would play with it
- the clues that tell us its age.
Discuss toys from the past
Give students the opportunity to reflect on how toys and games have changed and to use terms associated with the passing of time. Discuss:
- what each toy is made of
- who would play with it
- when it might have been used
- the clues that tell us its age
- how it has changed over time.
Students might make comments such as:
- tricycles are used today but they are made of different material
- toys today aren't made of metal because metal rusts easily and you wouldn't have the toy for long if you left it outside
- toys are made of different materials today for safety reasons.
