Collaborative task
Now that you know the rules for using semicolons, collaborate with a classmate to practise using semicolons in sentences.
Use Notepad to compose five sentences. Make sure that four of the five sentences need to have a semicolon added and one of the sentences does not. Notepad is useful for this task as it does not have a spelling or grammar checker.
-
Share your Notepad file with your classmate via email, USB drive or Bluetooth (.pdf 115kB).
-
Ask your classmate to add semicolons to the sentences where they are needed. When they have completed this you can check their work and discuss their answers with them.
-
Have a look at Task 4 in this Captivate tutorial to learn how to create Captivate quizzes.
-
When you have done this, open Captivate and select Blank project > set the Width to 980 and Height to 490 (to fit the laptop screen) > OK.
-
Choose Quiz menu > Question Slide > Short answer > Graded Question.
-
The New short answer question dialogue box will appear. Change the following:
-
In the Name section, type Rewrite the sentence adding a semicolon in the correct place.
-
In the Question section, type a sentence that needs to have a semicolon added to it.
-
Change Points to 1.
-
In the Acceptable Answer section, type the sentence with the semicolon in it and then click OK.
-
-
You can edit the font, size and colour of your slide once the question slide has been created.
-
Repeat steps 3 to 5 to create at least five quiz questions.
-
When you have completed the questions, click on Preview and check your quiz. When you are happy with it, click on Publish.
-
Share your published quiz with your classmates. How did they go?
