The Board of Studies NSW syllabus for the Australian curriculum English K−10 contains outcome and content statements for Stage 2 through to Stage 5 that relate to active and passive voice. This resource will support teachers in addressing these grammar requirements.

A student:

  • uses effective and accurate sentence structure, grammatical features, punctuation conventions and vocabulary relevant to the type of text when responding to and composing texts EN2-9B

    • Understand and apply knowledge of language forms and features

      • understand that verbs represent different processes (doing, thinking, saying, and relating) and that these processes are anchored in time through tense(ACELA1482)

A student:

  • uses an integrated range of skills, strategies and knowledge to read, view and comprehend a wide range of texts in different media and technologies EN3-3A

    • Understand and apply knowledge of language forms and features

      • recognise and compare how composers use a range of language features, including connectives, topic sentences and active and passive voice, to achieve their purposes

  • uses knowledge of sentence structure, grammar, punctuation and vocabulary to respond to and compose clear and cohesive texts in different media and technologies EN3-6B

    • Understand and apply knowledge of language forms and features

      • experiment using a range of language features, eg connectives, topic sentences, active and passive voice and nominalisation

      • understand how ideas can be expanded and sharpened through careful choice of verbs, elaborated tenses and a range of adverb groups/phrases (ACELA1523) Critical and creative thinking icon

A student:

  • responds to and composes texts for understanding, interpretation, critical analysis, imaginative expression and pleasure EN4-1A

    • Respond to and compose texts

      • explore and explain the ways authors combine different modes and media in creating texts, and the impact of these choices on the viewer/listener (ACELY1735) Critical and creative thinking icon

A student:

  • responds to and composes increasingly sophisticated and sustained texts for understanding, interpretation, critical analysis, imaginative expression and pleasure EN5-1A

    • Respond to and compose texts
